Hormel Girls
Article from "Hormel Foods News Magazine" October 2007 issue
One of the most colorful chapters in Hormel’s history comes alive this November at the History Theatre in St. Paul with the world premiere of a new musical, Hormel Girls. With book & lyrics by Laurie Flanigan and music by Hiram Titus, Hormel Girls features some of the Twin Cities’ favorite actors. Choreographed by Emmy-award winning Linda Talcott Lee and under the direction of Sari Ketter, the cast of six women and two men tell the story of the Hormel Girls caravan from it’s humble beginnings as a drum & bugle corps to it’s glamorous days as the nationally syndicated radio program, Music With the Hormel Girls.
Playwright Laurie Flanigan interviewed several of the original Hormel Girls as she researched the project, and says these interviews greatly influenced her work. “I was very fortunate to talk to several women who shared their amazing stories. This show is a tribute to them, and to the spirit of Jay C. Hormel. He believed in these girls – their sales ability and their talent, and every one of them, to this day, remembers his generosity and his vision.”
Hormel Girls opens November 24th and runs through December 23rd. The November 24th opening features a pre-show Artists’ Circle discussion at 7:00 p.m., followed by an 8:00 p.m. performance and a gala post-show reception.
