A Civil War Christmas

1864 It is Christmastime in Washington, DC. President Lincoln is trying to heal the wounds of a nation. Soldiers on both sides are bravely holding on to the promise of a brighter future for their country. And people of every walk of life long for wholeness and celebration as Christmas Eve draws near. This epic musical incorporates folk songs, spirituals, and traditional Christmas carols such as “God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen,” “Silent Night,” and “O Tannenbaum.” Filled with intrigue and surprise, this Christmas musical reveals a world that is simultaneously torn apart by war and held together by the hope for redemption.

"A Civil War Christmasis not a musical in the traditional sense, but is filled Christmas carols, spirituals, and war ballads masterfully directed by local darling J. D. Steele… Jackson Hurst's rendition of 'Children, Go Where I Send Thee' is as lively as any Broadway show tune. And while you may not normally consider 'Silent Night' a show-stopper, Jan Lee (as Mary Todd Lincoln) sings the carol to a dying Jewish soldier in a voice that could melt the ice clean off the Potomac River. If she doesn’t bring tears to your eyes, I recommend checking your pulse to make sure you have a heart."

"A Civil War Christmas, the musical by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paula Vogel that's currently playing at History Theatre, includes the expected holiday fare of nostalgia, merriment and music. What's unexpected is the broad panoramic historical landscape across which the Pulitzer-prize winning playwright casts this epic work."
