RAW STAGES Debutante Ball

by Eric "Pogi" Sumangil
reading directed by Randy Reyes

January 15–January 15, 2014

Around Valentine's Day, local Filipino-Americans get together for the annual Debutante's Ball. It's an event filled with pageantry and elegance - plus a fair amount of teen angst and rebellion. Through hip-hop and Filipino love songs, this new play explores the struggles between tradition and assimilation, parental pressure and independence.

NOTE: The Raw Stages reading of Debutante Ball on January 15, 2014 will be a fundraiser for the storm relief effort in the Philippines. There are many Filipinos in the Twin Cities area who have direct connections to family & friends in the area of the Philippines which was affected by Typhoon Haiyan on November 8th – including Eric “Pogi” Sumangil, the playwright of Debutante Ball. Typhoon Haiyan is the deadliest Philippine typhoon on record, killing more than 6,000 and leaving 2 million people without homes. Relief efforts are underway, but there is still a dire need for resources and assistance. A portion of ticket proceeds from the reading will be donated to the Fil-Minnesotan Association’s #FMAstormrelief fund, and audience members will have the opportunity to make additional contributions. The Fil-Minnesotan Association is a non-profit organization which serves the local Filipino-American community by coordinating socio-civic, educational, cultural, and artistic opportunities such as the annual Presentation of Debutantes and Escorts in the Twin Cities. More info can be found at: www.fil-minnesotan.org

The RAW STAGES Festival will be held at the 3M Auditorium in the Minnesota History Center (345 West Kellogg Blvd., St. Paul).

Tickets (general admission): $10 per reading or $25 for a RAW STAGES Pass
